If you are skier or boarder seeking to protect your eyes from the harmful effects of the Sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays, you have to get the right sunglasses. The best way for skiers to defend themselves from Ultraviolet rays is with proper clothing, which includes protective sunglasses that are imperative in shielding a skier’s eyes. Don’t just by a cheap pair of glasses otherwise you will put your eyes at risk for many reasons.

In short, best thing to visit a qualified, local optician, get an eye test and advice on the best sunglasses available to you. Everybody has an optician nearby, so why not pop in. Your lenses need to provide 100% protection from the sun’s harmful UV rays and just look good on you. UV rays can quickly burn your eyes if they areas are not adequately safeguarded, or if exposure to the sun is extensive. Damaging or loosing your eye sight is a lot more expensive than a decent pair of sun glasses:

Key things to look out for when choosing sunglasses for skiing and boarding:

full UV protection

face-hugging frames

secure strap system

prescription lenses if required

impact-resistant lenses

impact-resistant frames

polarized eye wear

…. and the cool look you want!!!

hard case for protection

Your local Optician will know best

You local optician can advice you. Most opticians have a full range of designer brands, with or without prescription lenses. From exquisitely fashionable sun wear to high tech stylish sports wear. most importantly they offer high quality sunglasses with full UV protection to shield the eyes from harmful rays.

In summary, always wear protective eye wear when skiing and boarding, visit your optician, have an eye test before you buy sunglasses. Doing anything else could be costly or at least a waste of money.

There are many different types of clubs throughout the world. In fact, there is a club or organization for just about everything that you can imagine! Skiing is no exception. Ski clubs are a great way to learn new things, and to go on ski vacations with other members. In fact, ski club members often get discounted rates on ski vacation packages.

No matter where you live, there is a ski club near you. This is true even if you live in a place that does not ever get snowfall! These clubs regularly get together for trips to various mountains, ski areas, and ski resorts. Some are local clubs, meaning that the slopes that they ski on are within driving distance, while others are more national or global, which means that they not only ski locally, if possible, but they also plan ski trips.

Again, members of ski clubs often receive deep discounts on ski vacation packages. Arrangements are usually made through the club, so that everyone is eligible for the discounts. The money that is required from each member for the trip is usually paid to the club, and the club passes the funds on to pay for lodging, airfare, meals, lift tickets, and other perks that are included in the trip. Because arrangements are being made for a group of people– which is usually fairly large – discounts are given. This benefits all members of the club.

The discounts aren’t the only thing to be excited about. These clubs get together regularly – even if they aren’t getting together to ski. They join together for other activities as well, such as cookouts and fundraisers. Many ski clubs do annual fundraisers to help less fortunate families and children at Christmas time. Others do annual fundraisers to help preserve the environment – which is usually a topic of great importance to skiers who love being out in the wide open spaces and fresh air.

While skiing is what brings these groups together in the first place, it is not necessarily what keeps them together. Their love of a common sport, and their common interests and feeling of community is what keeps them together – and it keeps them skiing together for years and years. If you are a skier, you should definitely consider joining a club. It doesn’t matter – in most cases – what level you are at. Beginners are usually welcomed, and this is a great way for beginners to quickly improve their skills and techniques out on the slopes.

Located near Gatlinburg, Tennessee Ober
Gatlinburg is the only ski resort in the state. It is
more than just a ski resort, however. It is a complete
family vacation spot with an amusement park, indoor
ice skating, a bungee tower, an alpine slide, and
many other activities and attractions – there is
something to please everyone.

With an elevation of 3301 feet, and a vertical drop of
600 feet, Ober Gatlinburg features eight trails: two
beginner trails, four intermediate trails, and two
advanced trails. There are three lifts, including two
quad lifts, one double lift, and one surface lift. The
season runs from the middle of December through
early March, and night skiing is allowed on all trails
except the Grizzly trail.

Rentals are available for both ski equipment and
snowboarding equipment. Private and group lessons
for skiing and snowboarding are also available
through the Smokey Mountain Snow Sport School.
You can also easily find food at the many snack
bars, food carts, the café, the restaurant, or in the
lounge.

You must not miss the longest chair lift ride in the
south! You will see awesome views of the Great
Smoky Mountains. You will also get a bird’s eye
view of some of the slopes, and you can have your
picture taken on top of the mountain. If you don’t
ski, don’t worry! You can ride back down the
mountain on the chair lift as well. Don’t forget the
Tramway. The tramway departs from downtown
Gatlinburg and takes you to the ski resort and the
amusement park.

Even if you don’t ski, you can still explore the thrill
of flying down a mountain at a high speed – or a
slow speed if you choose. This is possible with the
Alpine Slide. The slide is approximately 1800 feet
long, and takes you down a winding wooded slope.
You have total control over your speed with the
use of a braking device on each sled. Other
attractions at the amusement park include the
Black Bear Habitat, a bungee jump, a water race,
go karts, indoor ice skating, kiddie land, an arcade,
miniature golf, a Spider Web Velcro Wall Jump,
water rides, and a shooting range.

No matter what type of fun or adventure you are
seeking, there is something to satisfy everyone in
the family at Ober Gatlinburg Ski Resort and
Amusement Park. This is definitely a trip worth taking
– especially if you have younger kids or senior
citizens traveling with you.

According to the National Ski and Snowboarders Retailers Association, over 5.5 million individuals participated in the ski season in 2007. The average skier skied for 6.2 days and the stats were at roughly 60% male, 40% female. The median age is 33 years old! That’s a pretty good percentage for skiers in the US. If I factored in all the other skiers as well you would definitely see a major number. However, this time we are just going to do the stats and the best places to ski in the US. I’m sure most people would consider this a hard thing to do since the US has such beautiful places to visit and such amazing options when it comes to a winter ski vacation!

Whistler & Blackcomb: Sound familiar? It should, it’s only been rated as one of the best places to ski and snowboard! This location has around 8000 acres to choose from with well over 200 trails for all level abilities as well, such as beginner, intermediate and professional. The Whistler & Blackcomb resort is also rated the best year round mountain resort as well – which means this specific resort isn’t just amazing for a winter ski vacation, but every other season as well!

Aspen: Naturally when most people say they are going skiing, the words “Aspen” roll off their tongue. Not only is this location about luxury, but beauty as well! Aspen is filled to the brim with steep hills, and hundreds of acres of stunning terrain short to take your breath away! This is also a really cool place to go sightseeing as well.

Vail: Colorado always has been and always will be rated as one of the best places to ski, and it’s no wonder – with amazingly sculptured mountain tops, perfect snow conditions and seven bowls stretching over 6 miles – what’s not to love about Vail?!? This location is also the biggest skiing resort in the country and is said to have the best world class skiing worldwide!

Jackson Hole: While this location has an odd little title, it also has some of the most untouched and uncrowded scenery that you will ever see! Most people suggest that this is one of the best places for a winter ski vacation, especially if you are an advanced skier! Also, in and around this location are some really expansive malls, shopping areas, and spas!

Deer Valley: How could I actually end this little winter ski vacation top five without mentioning Utah at least once! Over all, Utah seems like a pretty awesome place to ski, but in particular the Deer Valley resort has incredibly skiing conditions and a ton of lavish amenities including manicured slopes, ski attendants, and of course – top notch restaurants!

Obviously some of these you may have heard before. I also know that a lot of people actually prefer Colorado when it comes to skiing. People seem to think that this state in particular has some of the best snow, the best slopes and the best Colorado ski packages. While this may be true as far as winter ski vacation packages are concerned, you will never know unless you give it a try. By the way, if you are going to Colorado for skiing specifically, and you have never skied before, I really suggest checking out Colorado ski lessons! This is really going to give you a chance to see how to ski like the pros!

The idea of a ski vacation can have a broad interpretation. From person to person, the expectation of accommodations, facilities, ski terrain, climate and amenities varies to an exponential degree. If one adds the complexity of organizing the trip, booking the rooms, purchasing tickets, renting ski equipment, sorting out transportation, the vacation can quickly become more work than enjoyment. The luxury of a custom designed ski vacation package can, in light of all the logistical complexities, ease the mind back into vacation mode.

Companies such as Emotion-Tours, a tour operator based in Québec, have carved themselves a niche in the market of ski vacation packages. They offer several options for group tours to ski destinations in Italy, France and Switzerland, but what sets them apart from the competition is their customization. An Emotion-Tours vacation begins with the assignment of a member of their team to each client project so that all the details of the vacation can be recorded, organized and booked by one point of contact. Any special requests or changes to itinerary are managed by one person, eliminating the risk of unfulfilled requests or unmet expectations.

After organizing a ski vacation package for a client, the Emotion-Tours specialist’s next step is to spice up the vacation with insider knowledge of the location. Over the past 30 years, Robert Clouette, the founder and operator of the company, has personally experienced numerous ski vacations at each of the destinations offered by Emotion-Tours. His first-hand knowledge of the ski slopes, the resorts and the nearby amenities is shared within the Emotion-Tours team, enabling specialists to make each trip smoother and even more special than a standard package. Perhaps there is a run in Verbier which has a particularly spectacular view, or a après-ski bar in Courchevel that serves an especially potent and warming concoction, or a resort in Tignes with a hot tub that cannot be missed; these are the insider details that Mr. Clouette is pleased to share with his team and their clients.

With the perfect ski vacation package arranged, Emotion-Tours clients fly to their destination in Europe. A professional and courteous guide awaits the clients’ arrival to escort them to the final ski resort destination, ensuring all details are accounted for, all expectations of comfort are met. Emotion-Tours takes their commitment to their clients one step further by ensuring the quality of the accompanying guide. Guides for Emotion-Tours have excellent knowledge of the destination’s locale and take pride in providing an unparalleled vacation experience for their clients.

Generally included within an Emotion-Tours ski vacation package are return flights from Canada to Europe, private transfers, accommodation at a known and trusted resort or hotel, ski passes, a dedicated Emotion-Tours Guide for the duration of the vacation, and all taxes and service charges. Also included are spectacular hilltop views, cozy evenings spent warm inside, and a relaxing vacation experience.

For more information, or to book a ski vacation package, visit Emotion-Tours.

Snowy peaks of the Alps have been awaiting you with their white magic! Plan your trip now – check the newest airfare deals, hotels or motels on-line, and prepare yourself for an unforgettable white winter full of adventure!

Have you already thought about a suitable destination?

Do you like sipping scalding Minestrone soup after demanding ski ride? Then Italy is the right choice for you! Among the most popular resorts e.g. belong: Courmayeur, Sestriere , Bormio or Cortina. By the way Italians are said to be really caring about their slopes! Except for the fact that you can find ski signs on every corner you can really enjoy the smoothness of Italian snowy slopes as they are rolled even more than once a day!

Austrian slopes may take you by surprise with their preciseness and modern equipment. The newest ski cabins and lifts are to be seen right there! It could be appreciated, that Austrian ski lines cover over 860 km all together, however, the price for ski pass may be a bit higher than in Italy or France. So if Austria is the right place for you, go and enjoy places like: Hintertux, Kaunertal , Obergurgl, Soelden and others!

Switzerland is an ultimate choice for snowboarding, carving and basically for those who are keen on wider slopes. Apart from that you may fancy Swiss snow park, which is said to be one of the biggest in Europe! Enjoy your holiday in Zermatt, Megeve, Avoriaz, or Chamonix!

France got really famous with its gigantic ski areas! If you want to enjoy a vast number of hills and ski paths then France must be your favourite ski destination! You can find the biggest ski area there covering 600 km ski lines! And after an exhausting ski day you can always indulge yourself in a glass of tasteful French wine:).

Finally we advise you to check the terms and conditions applied by your chosen low cost airlines (if you are buying cheap flights to some ski destination). You may be asked to pay an extra fee for carrying your skies/snowboard with you on the plan (It’s usually cheaper to pay on-line in advance, the weight limit is usually up to 15 – 20 kg). A limited release is often applied, which means that any damage or delay is “at your own risk” so make sure that you have insurance to cover them.

And don’t forget to book your hotel/motel soon, otherwise you may find out that everything is already full!

In the second of our articles about booking the perfect family ski holiday, we look at how to choose the most suitable ski school for your children.

Many resorts have ski schools for groups and private lessons starting from the age of 3 upwards. The little ones can start at a children’s ski garden with a club house, toilets and refreshments and indoor play activities should the weather turn cold. The ski areas offer a range of ski terrain to suit all first time skiers. They are well staffed with English speaking ski instructors and assistances to help get the little ones on their feet, or skis.

Children progress through various levels of skiing and can proudly return home as fully fledged professionals clutching their award medals. The ski schools should have a range of ski lifts from small rope tows to Poma drag lifts to teach the children the basics of getting up the mountain. The snow coverage is often guaranteed as many ski schools will have added snow making facilities and their own piste bashers.

Check the location of the children’s ski school in relation to the main ski slopes as it is easier to drop children at the same location you will be skiing yourselves. Often the children’s facilities are based in the village centre away from the main ski areas and you will find yourselves running around to collect your children. Check also that the ski school is accessible by the free village ski buses and nearby bus stops.

It is important to point out that not all three year olds are ready to listen and learn in a foreign environment. Some children’s ski schools can be oversubscribed during holiday periods and factors such as the weather and large group sizes may play a big part in the child’s enjoyment of outdoor activities. If your child is physically confident and is used to a childcare facility there is no reason why they shouldn’t come away with the ability to perform an elegant snowplough by the end of a week’s lessons.

Some parents may of course prefer their little ones to have private lessons. In this instance it is good to share a private instructor with some friends to spread the cost and make the lessons fun and not too much of a challenge.

Good English speaking private instructors can be found in resorts and details should be available through the local tourist office or resort websites. It is advisable to pre book lessons and check availability before committing to a holiday package to make sure the lessons you want will be available. Larger organisations such as ESF and International ski schools based in France will take children from 4 upwards and will offer a range of group and private lessons in the main ski areas. Check the group sizes and drop off points as these factors will affect your lesson preference.

For younger toddlers and babies, most ski resorts will offer a local crèche facility for babies starting from 3 months upwards. Children used to a nursery set up will get the most out of this and should settle quickly. The childcare facility will want to see proof of medical records and vaccination certificates and these should be presented to the crèche when you arrive.

Families often bring their own nanny or better still obliging grandparents to help cover the childcare allowing the parents themselves a few hours ski time knowing their children are in safe hands. Little ones can be entertained with a bit of sledging and snowman building to make sure that they too are able to enjoy a winter holiday.

Regarding ski hire it is best to hire your equipment, boots, skis, poles or boards when you arrive in the resort. This ensures all boots and equipment fit correctly and you have the best possible range of equipment and expertise to hand. Children learning from scratch will not need poles to start with and often find that they are an added distraction and get in the way when learning to the lifts, take advise from the hire shop and

Ski hire companies can offer some good online deals with early booking discounts and free children’s packages. Check that deals include helmets to hire for children, poles will only be needed by older children who have progress beyond the beginner stages of skiing. It is important to make sure ski boots are worn with ski socks to avoid discomfort and cold feet. Check that boots are comfortable after the first day’s wearing and report back to the shop if you are not happy with the equipment and need to change it. Some shops will offer a system whereby boots and skis can be left at the shop over night to store and dry until the next day. This works well if you are using the local ski buses to get around the resort and do not want to carry your equipment backwards and forwards every day.

Tired of getting you suntan lotion mixed up with sand, as you lie baking on a beach? Bored of sizzling in the summer sun, while pretending to have to fun? Does the idea of a British holiday, turn you cold? With destinations such as Germany, Andorra, Austria, France and Italy, an adrenaline pumping adventure is just a cheap flight away. Fresh Ski Holidays are ideal for experienced skiers, beginners or families on a budget. Why not take a fresh approach to holidays?

Rising costs of fuel means fewer and fewer families and professionals are taking to the slopes this season. Winter ski resorts bracing themselves for a tough ski season, and it is estimated that resort and ski bookings are down 15 percent from last year. But with Fresh ski holidays and so many cheap flights to Europe and beyond, there is nothing to prevent you from skiing this summer. Summer skiing will mean you will miss the rush of the Christmas season and enjoy the peaceful serenity of the clear and crisp mountain slopes.

Low to mid-season is the best time to bag a cheap ski holiday, and for those able to go on holiday with short notice, last minute ski holidays are sold at greatly reduced cost. However it is always wise to check conditions before you go as snow fall can unreliable. Once you have selected your budget ski break, one of the delights of a traditional holiday of skiing, is “Après-Ski”. This is of course, where you can share your stories of derring-do over a glass or two of wine with families and friends! For most skiers it’s almost as important as the skiing itself, so don’t forget to visit your resort’s bars and restaurants.

What destinations should you consider for your cheap ski break? Andorra has always been a favourite budget ski holiday destination. Set in the heart of the Pyrenees, Andorra is famous for its shopping, making it an ideal destination for those keen to sample the Après-Ski nightlife and duty-free in Soldeu. With beginner to intermediate slopes, Andorra is particularly popular amongst young snowboarders. Soldeu is renowned for its reliable snow forecast and numerous snow canyons, and has over 82kms of off-piste skiing.

Or maybe you would prefer Austria? Austria has an excellent choice of ski slopes and is very popular amongst English skiers. Finkenberg offers great value for money and there are many glaciers that offer skiers an extended ski season. Home to St Anton and Kitbuhel, two of the most famous ski destinations in the world, both have an international reputation and amazing atmosphere. Hintertux in Austria has incredible ski facilities throughout the year. At 2660m altitude, the Hintertux Glacier offers numerous pistes that can be quite challenging for glacier skiers.

September 2009

With the ski holiday booking season in full swing, it is clear that a number of people are looking for ways to save money in 2009/2010. One of the best ways to do this is to consider booking a self catered rather than a catered ski holiday.

The initial advantages of booking a self catered ski chalet are obvious – a self catered chalet costs less to book than a catered chalet. However, many people are put off self catered ski holidays because of the perceived “hassle factor”. They picture queues outside French estate agencies to pick up keys, and trying to hire linen and towels in resort.

Although these scenarios do still exist, with a bit of research it is easy to book hassle free and reasonably priced self catered chalets.

There are a number of holiday companies which rent self catered ski properties, but offer a number of services which make things go a lot smoother on holiday. Some of the main services which you need to keep an eye out for:

1) Someone to meet you in resort to give out keys.

This may sound obvious, but after a long drive down France, or a flight with the kids, it is great to be able to call someone on arrival in resort who can meet you and show you into your ski chalet. This means you don’t have any problems finding the property, and when you get there you have someone who can show you around and show you how everything works. If it is your first time in a particular resort you can also use this opportunity to pick their brains about the skiing, and where to find things such as supermarkets.

2) The facility to pre-book linen and towels.

With airline baggage allowance constantly being cut, and with space at a premium when packing up a car, it is great to arrive at a property and have towels and bedding supplied. It is even better if your beds are made up for your arrival so be sure to check that this is an option when booking your holiday.

3) Welcome basket on arrival.

A lot of self catered holiday companies arrange for a small welcome pack to great you. This is usual a token selection of cleaning essentials, a bottle of wine and perhaps a little bit of snack food like croissants. However, don’t underestimate how tired and thirsty you can be after a long journey and having a few things to eat drink on arrival can really make the world of difference.

4) Pre arrival supermarket shop.

Some companies will go shopping on your behalf – you email them a list and they arrange it for you. If your holiday company won’t do this, check with the local supermarket. Some (like Sherpa) will offer free delivery on food shops over a certain value.

5) Ad hoc catering arrangements.

Many ski resorts now have companies who offer an ad hoc external catering service – from take away curries or pizzas to four course dinners prepared in your chalet, served and then tidied away. This means that self catered holidays can also benefit from a touch of catered luxury. Having the flexibility to mix self cooked meals with eating out, and in house catering is a great way of sampling the local produce and cuisine.

Nowadays, self catered chalets can match (if not exceed) the quality and luxury of catered chalet properties. By checking the level of service you get with your booking, a self catered ski holiday can be easy on the pocket while being as effortless as a catered chalet ski holiday.
